Linking positivity and negativity: the two opposite sides of human life

Life is not always rainbows and daises. When you flick through social media profiles, you would mostly see people wearing big smiles on their faces as though they have never been through the darker side of their life. But the reality is different. As human beings, we all are bound to go through numerous challenges as we move on with time. Life is not always a bed of roses as it should be. In fact, it is often tough and unfair. Nobody achieves success in life without battling through a crisis. Even the most successful, beautiful and wealthy people on this planet have their own share of problems to deal with. But if we look at life positively, the challenges that we face today all contribute to our overall development. They constantly test our patience and perseverance, and make us stronger every day. They add meaning to our experiences and give us a new life if we really have the courage and willingness to swim through them.

However, this positivity should not come at the cost of forcing ourselves to hide our negative emotions. Although all of us go through difficult times almost every day, it seems most of us have become really good at hiding our emotions from the world and even from ourselves. This mass self-deception is unfortunately leading to more complicated issues. When we experience negative energy, we should not block it. We should simply let it pass by. If we feel like crying, we should cry. Or if we feel like screaming at the top of our lungs, we should do that too. After all, pain and suffering are part of our life and we have to accept them as integral part of our journey. When we deliberately push aside our negative emotions, we are training ourselves to be incredible escape artists. We often turn to food, internet, alcohol, drugs, shopping or work to distract ourselves from those so-called unhealthy emotions. As a result, we often plunge into more serious consequences such as alcohol/drug dependency, obesity, depression and cyber addiction which keeps most of us glued to the screens.

Life is not always about being happy. We should remember that both positive and negative emotions are equally important in shaping our lives. Just as we need to experience darkness to appreciate light, we should experience sadness and pain to be able to appreciate happiness and peace. If we never experience negative emotions in life, we can never understand what it is like to be a happy and successful person. In fact, these negative emotions emanate positive energy that illuminates our future.

Without challenges, we would also miss much of what drives us to keep moving and grow. When we shy away from harsh realities of life, we inadvertently confine ourselves to a secluded corner of our own small world, not knowing what it truly means to be a human being. I feel it would be very sad if we can’t reach our full potential just because we were too afraid to experience our negative emotions and rise up to the challenges. But if we can accept that our life experiences can be negative half the time, we can perhaps find a renewed energy to continue our journey without much difficulty. We shall come to understand that life is full of ups and downs, and that it is alright to fail at times. It is quite relaxing to understand that life does not have to be rosy all the time. We don’t always have to be positive and full of smiles. We don’t always have to be on the top of the game. After all, we are only humans and human beings are not perfect. We can make mistakes and we can fall down. But we should never forget to rise up again and keep moving. Indeed, life is truly amazing. Let us explore every bit of it, both brighter and darker side of it, and enjoy it to the fullest.
